Midwest charm meets LGBTQ+ magic in Michigan’s most welcoming coastal escape.
🌈 Why Saugatuck & Douglas?
Picture this: A cozy lakeside town with art galleries, queer-owned businesses, rainbow flags fluttering in the breeze, all adjacent to an iconic beach. Welcome to Saugatuck and Douglas, Michigan’s queer coastal capital. Located just over 2 hours from Chicago or 3 from Detroit, this twin-town destination has long been a beloved retreat for LGBTQ+ travelers—and for good reason.
🏨 Where to Stay
The Dunes Resort (Douglas)
This iconic LGBTQ+ resort is a destination in itself. The Dunes Resort features hotel rooms, cabins, and party vibes that peak in summer with pool parties, drag shows, and themed weekends. It’s men-focused but open to all who are respectful and ready for fun.
Some notes on The Dunes Resort:
- You do not have to stay at The Dunes Resort to enjoy their pool and club spaces.
- Guests may have to pay a cover on busy days/evenings.
- Parking also does tend to get full on weekends/holidays.
- Cabins – The cabins are excellent for friends vacationing together. All include a pull-out couch bed.
- Cabins come with wrist bands for access to the pool and club without paying cover. You can add additional guests to your cabin for a fee – this will include wristbands for those guests, so being honest about your crew size may be worth it.
- Dunes Rooms – Every summer I meet someone who is staying in a Dunes Room and did not realize what they were signing up for. The Dunes Rooms sound like a real deal – and they are! But… I have also heard them described as “like staying in a room inside a bath house” as far as comfort and peace. So be aware that the Dunes Rooms are not your standard hotel room.
